For the final phase of the Mobile C.R.O.P.S. project this season, we will be partnering with Project H to build an office/classroom to function as a permanent work/play space

to better serve the students of Urban Compass as part of our long term goals. I will keep you posted on the renovation of the utility closet as the project progresses.

Students from Urban Compass and I will conduct workshops in our mobile test kitchen and demonstrate how to make fresh sorbet from herbs grown from our vertical garden. Flavors will range from Lavender-Lemon, Lavender-Blueberry, Lemon-Basil and Mint-Lemon. Participants will learn first hand how to prepare, store and freeze the ingredients so that they can make sorbet in their home kitchens. There will also be samples given out so that they can choose their favorite flavor.

Toyota Flower Patch Used to Make Statement

Guerilla Gardeners are not the only ones beautifing our Public Spaces, it appears as though Toyota has been monopolizing on this idea by creating floral scapes to market the Prius. Artist are taking back our Public Spaces to make a statement of "You Reap What You Sow".

Guerrilla Gardening Seed Bombing

If you have ever been interested in gardening in areas where access is limited, seed bombs are a great way to create green space on Public Land. Seed bombs can be made easily by combining a mixture of clay soil, compost and seeds in 5:1:1 ratio with water to bind the ingredients together.

Mobile C.R.O.P.S. Project (Community Resource for Organic Produce & Sustainability)

Public Art through Sustainable Design:

I have designed a mobile framework which will be made with recycled, green building materials. The structure will consist of portable screens which will be hinged together on site and built to approximately 8’ x 16’ x 8’. The structure will be placed and secured onto a platform that can be altered to fit into any public space. The panels, which will be made out of found or recycled building materials, will screw into the frame and will be designed to tell a story about memory, place or notions of home. They may consist of photographs that will be transferred onto Plexiglas or vellum, text made out of drought tolerant plants or moss paint prints, and/or hanging woolen pockets that will serve as the vertical garden beds which will be designed in collaboration with the students from Urban Compass. I designed the frame of the “home” and the students and I will collaborate to fill the “heart” of the home within the panels.

Why I enlisted in Guerilla Gardening

I always aspired to return to graduate school but could never find a program that met all of my interests in the arts, until I discovered the public practice program at Otis. Finally there was a program that welcomed and actually encouraged multiple interests. I applied and was accepted within a couple of weeks of starting the program.
My cohorts and I had the opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary art & design project in Laton, CA, a small farming community in the San Joaquin Valley for about nine months. The final culminating event took place on Saturday, March 21st, 2009 in a public video installation highlighting the unique identity of Laton through multiple outdoor projections onto freshly painted buildings. People of the community processed along the two block long main street where they encountered music, video projections of life in the community, and opportunities to talk about the future of the region.
This experience has been life changing for me because it was during this time that I discovered my place in the art world. The art for me is not in the object but in using the object as a catalyst to build relationships and create dialogue between diverse groups of people. It also inspired my work because the experience of going to a small town made me realize how much my own town has changed into what is now atypical suburb. Today much of our farmland is being destroyed and it is predicted that within ten years there will not be enough land to grow the amount of food we will need to sustain the nation. I realized the importance of learning and teaching alternative methods of growing food.
For my final thesis work I am building a mobile garden within the city of Watts. I will be working with a group of 30-50 students from grades K-5 that are members of Urban Compass, an after school enrichment program. I hope this project will serve as a prototype for what I hope will be many other projects to follow.
